Teaching Insight

Teaching our current generation sounds old school!!!

We as teachers of net generation need to engage our students to be active learners and ourselves.  It is no longer about "lecturing" our students on the content but rather engage them in inquiry based learning, where students learn collaboratively with their classmates.  However, to accomplish any activity or learning in your classroom, you need to have good classroom management skills.

Some of the ways that I have tried in my classroom and have worked effectively with my 7th grades are:

1.) Your room environment needs to be warm and welcoming so the students feel comfortable to ask question, make comments, and be active participants of their learning.
2.) Have clear expectation of what you expect the students to do before the start of any activity.
3.) If you are conducting an activity it is always a good idea to make sure you all the material you need.
4.) It is always a good idea to have multiple medium of instruction available to students at all times. Some of those ways are: PowerPoint Presentation, provide the students with a copy of the instruction, or have the students ask their classmates before asking you a question you already answered.
5.) Students at all times should be aware of the consequence if they choose not to participate or engage in the activity.
6.) Always monitor your students’ learning by talking and asking questions to your students instead of sitting at your desk while the students work.
7.) Always keep in mind the pacing of your class and the activity.  The activity needs to provide multiple opportunities for collaboration and group learning.
